Performing Arts in Davis
I can admit it. I’ve been a huge ABBA fan since I was 9 years old. I was living in Denmark and ABBA was playing on the radio all the time. My dance teacher was a huge ABBA fan and it was the only group that we danced to. Hasta Mañana was our Waltz routine. I didn’t understand any English and I would sing along “la la la SOS, la la la SOS” or “la la la la Mamma Mia!, da da da da DA Mamma Mia!”. In 2005 I flew my mother back to New York so I could attend my 20th high school re-union which happened to be on Mother’s Day weekend. What a better way to celebrate my mother than to take her to Mamma Mia! on Broadway. I was hooked and have been obsessed with the show ever since.
Needless to say, when I found out that the Davis Musical Theater Company was opening their 35th season with Mamma Mia!, I picked up the phone and called Steve Isaacson, owner/director of DMTC, with the news that I was underwriting the show. He didn’t have to wait for “Ring, Ring why don’t you give me a call?”
In addition to being a huge Mamma Mia! fan, I love the performing arts in general and think it is wonderful that the youth in this community have such a wonderful opportunity to get acting experience in musicals. All the body’s senses are activated and enables the learning process. DMTC has been producing a couple of generations of talent and this is probably not the last time I’ll sponsor a play.
I want to give Steve Isaacson and the entire cast a huge round of applause for a fabulous performance. Andrea Eve Thorpe is perfect as Donna Sheridan and she nails “The Winner Takes It All”. I think Bev Sykes at the Davis Enterprise couldn’t have written a better review and I absolutely love her ending “Do I recommend this production? Of course I do, I do, I do, I do, I do.” The show is sold out for this final weekend, but maybe there is a lucky person out there who can receive my spare ticket for the final production.
